Plastics In Our Life

Nowadays it is important to know which plastics can be identified the good, bad and safe, and what does the recycling number in the range from 1 to 7 mean?

1. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
Used to make bottles for still and carbonated water, soft drinks, ketchup, pickle, jelly and jam jars, cough syrup bottles, adhesive plasters etc.
Good: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones. But the problem immerses by second use of the same bottle as PET is a porous plastic, which let in bacterial and odor easier.

2. High density polyethylene (HDPE)
Used to make bottles and containers, yogurt and margarine tubs, trash and retail bags, shopping bags, deep freeze food packaging, fresh milk bottles etc.
Good: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones.

3. Low density polyethylene (LDPE)
Used to make disposable bags, stand up pouches, detergents, stretch film etc.
Safe: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones, but not as widely recycled as ≠ 1 or ≠ 2.

4. Polypropylene (PP)
Used to make household products for microwave oven, garden furniture, thermoforming (yoghurt and margarine tubs, dessert pots), food trays and lids, food packaging.
Safe: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones, but not as widely recycled as ≠ 1 or ≠ 2.

5. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Used to make bottles for non food products, most cling-wrapped meats, wrapped cheese and food sold in delicatessens, cosmetic packaging, blisters, window profiles and floor decking.
Bad: To soften into its flexible form, it adds “plasticizers” during production. Fabric softener is di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and during the production dioxin is evolved that is a suspected massive carcinogen.

6. Polystyrene (PS)
Used to make foam insulation and for hard applications, and toys.
Bad: Both forms of PS evolve during processing molecules styrene that is human carcinogen. They can influence the hormonal balance and the reproductive faculties of people. Benzene, butadiene and styrene (the basic building block) are suspected carcinogens.

7. Polycarbonate (PC) and other
Used to make baby bottles, microwave ovenware, plastic coating for metal cans.
Bad: Content bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical invented in the 1930s in search for synthetic estrogens. Can leach into food as product ages. A hormone disruptor. Responsible for cancer and obesity, diabetes, increase of aggression, dementia, etc.

Do not buy food in plastic packaging on which the kind of plastic is not marked. Do not heat up the food together with plastic packaging into the microwave oven. Do not store wine, beer, brandy or fresh milk in plastic bottles. Throw out plastic bottles and dishes by bad smell.
